Siemens is one of the few companies in the world to
offer a comprehensive portfolio of products, solutions
and services for all airport related processes. We draw
upon our experience and know-how for example in the
areas of aircraft preparation, baggage and freight
handling, passenger information services, consultancy
and operational services, building management systems,
transportation equipment, technical services, operation
and maintenance and last, but certainly not least,
security.
The effective prevention and management of any security
threat is predominantly a matter of fast and precise
processing of signals from all kinds of detectors. The
security communication network must transport these
signals in a reliable and fast manner, assuring full
availability in emergency conditions.
The complete picture of a scenario, however, only
becomes apparent if the various signals (received from
cameras, motion detectors, image generators, alarms and
other devices) are combined in a meaningful way and put
into the right context.
Secure check-in and boarding with biometric passenger
identification
The global threat of terrorism has led to a dramatic
increase in civil aviation security requirements.
Nowadays, not a single passenger whose biometric data
has not been registered is allowed boarding an airplane
to the United States. The European Community requires
similar security standards for civil aviation. But
repeated and detailed identity checks make for longer
lines and slow down the check-in and boarding
procedures, thus leading to higher costs and unhappy
passengers.
The biometric identification of passengers can remedy
this situation. With its biometric technologies, Siemens
automates the check-in and boarding procedures and makes
them more secure, efficient, and fast.
Our solution
The solution offered by Siemens is based on the reliable
identification and checking of passengers with the help
of biometric characteristics. After their travel
documents have been validated, the passengers’
fingerprints are scanned. For occasional passengers,
this is done at the check-in counter, while specially
registered passengers (such as frequent fliers) can have
it done once in a separate process for all future
flights.
The biometric fingerprint data is printed on the
boarding pass in the form of a 2-D barcode or
additionally stored in a database.
On the basis of this data, passengers can then be
processed automatically and securely.
To gain access to the airport’s secure zone and board
their plane, each passenger must touch a fingerprint
scanner that compares their data with the previously
collected scan.
In addition, specially registered passengers can check
in via the internet or at special terminals and store
their baggage before or after flights. They can even use
our mobile check-in solution, as the system
automatically checks their identity.
