Professional Mobile Radio (PMR) Networks

The challenge
PMR Communication is targeted to Customer groups with mission-critical requirements like:

  • Public Safety (e.g. Police, Border Control, Rescue and Fire services)
  • Armed Forces (e.g. National Defense)
  • Public Transportation (e.g. Train, Metro)
  • Utilities Industry (e.g. power, gas, water supply)
  • Protection of Large Events (e.g. Olympic Games)
  • Protection of Critical Infrastructure (e.g. Airports, Harbour)

In order to fulfill their daily business (e.g. police) and to face new challenges due to increasing threats (natural catastrophes, terrorism) they need a reliable, secure, flexible and efficient mobile communication system.

Nowadays many of these organizations still use out-dated analogue mobile radio technology, that can’t meet even basic requirements like:

  • Frequency economy and flexible capacity allocation
  • Encryption of voice and data
  • Dynamic group communication

Our Solution

To address this challenge, Siemens offers together with partners integrated Professional PMR solutions including related services and applications targeted to the dedicated use by the above mentioned customer groups.

PMR networks offer two-way radio communication carrying voice, data or a mix of both. These networks are mainly non-public networks tailored to the specific needs of the professional mobile user groups.

The solutions offered by Siemens are based on the Terrestrial Trunked Radio technology (TETRA or TETRAPOL).
TETRA is the standard for digital trunked radio developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) in co-operation with leading vendors, network providers and users.
TETRA is considered the leading professional mobile radio technology, with the advantages of in-built encryption, high voice quality, spectrum efficiency and simultaneous voice and data communication. A further advantage of the TETRA standard is that it has a number of open interface specifications that can be used by application developers to further enhance the capabilities of TETRA or provide applications according to the customer’s specific need.

Originally developed in France TETRAPOL is a comparable technology that is compliant to the relevant ETSI, ITU-T and EN standards.

Good Reasons for TETRA or TETRAPOL
  • Secure, Flexible & efficient Mobile Communication
  • Autonomous Networks, under total control of security forces
  • Reliable network with indispensable Security features (e.g. encryption)
  • Rapid deployment (mobile Systems)
  • Integration in Command &Control Centers
  • Robust and Easy to use Terminals
  • Group Communications (Group Call)
  • Fast Call Setup (“Push and Talk”)
  • Emergency calls
  • Direct Mode (Communication without network infrastructure)
  • Fast and Secure Data transmission (e.g. vehicle location, data base access)
