Continually increasing global supply interrelations
between companies are dependent upon reliable
transport and distribution systems for all
conceivable types, shapes, sizes and weights of
packages. These include containers, pallets, boxes,
parcels, packets and irregularly shaped freight
items. They all have to be transported from senders
to receivers within reliable time windows by truck
and train, ship and plane. Transport volumes and
energy prices are both continually increasing, which,
in turn, will place an increasing burden on both
companies and ecological systems in forthcoming
years. Intelligent pooling mechanisms are required
to avoid unnecessary indirect transport routes and
make efficient use of the various means of transport.
