Jun 27, 2002 | Siemens to build world's largest turbine-generator set for the pulp and paper industrySiemens Power Generation (PG) Industrial Applications Division will build the world's largest turbine-generator set with a backpressure turbine in the pulp and paper industry. The 150-megawatt turbine-generator set will be for the Wisaforest pulp mill located in northwest Finland, which will have an annual capacity of 800,000 metric tons of pulp after the final implementation of the project. The majority of the electrical and all the thermal output will be used for various processes in the plant, and a small amount of the electricity will be transferred into the public transmission grid. Delivery to the customer is scheduled for April 2004. Siemens PG secured the order, valued at more than EUR 10 million, from Wisapower Oy, a 100% subsidiary of the Finnish utility Pohjolan Voima Oy (PVO), Helsinki. The owner of the mill is the world's third largest pulp and paper producer UPM-Kymmene Oyj, with headquarters in the Finnish capital. more |

May 22, 2002 | Siemens' Industrial Solutions and Services Group launches restructuring initiativeSiemens' Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) is repositioning itself to strengthen its competitiveness as a supplier of industrial systems, maintenance services and sector-specific IT solutions. Joergen Ole Haslestad, the new President of I&S, noted: "Our goal is to rapidly focus I&S on its core competencies and reduce low-profit commitments." Cooperation within Siemens will also be strengthened in the area of industrial IT solutions and lifecycle services. Activities not belonging to the Group's future core businesses will be acquired and maintained by partners. Some 5,000 jobs, of which 3,700 are in Germany and 1,300 outside Germany, will be affected. Socially responsible arrangements are planned for another 2,000 employees, two-thirds of whom work in Germany. Initial talks on these arrangements began today with the relevant employee organizations.
