Jul 11, 2003 | Siemens: IT solutions connecting industrial automation concepts create the real-time enterprise, and open up new productivity potentialsIn the coming years, major productivity advances in the process and manufacturing industries will no longer be achieved solely with the optimization of individual production steps. "Taking a comprehensive view of all main and auxiliary processes in industry and the transparency of their contribution to earnings offer new potential for value creation", explained Joachim Striese, responsible for IT solutions in industry at Siemens Industrial Solutions & Services. The prerequisite for this, he says, is that information from the various data islands along the entire supply chain is made available to management to allow comparison in real time. Siemens intends to lay the foundation for precisely this kind of real-time enterprise, with a continuous flow of information, by expanding its IT product line for operations management (Manufacturing Execution System - MES). This therefore closes the IT gap that still exists today between the automation and IT islands in production and the software tools available at the management level such as SAP R/3. more |

Jun 05, 2003 | The coffee filter method is outdated - Mechanik Center Erlangen is now offering ISOPur, a system for cleaning industrial oils efficientlyMechanik Center Erlangen GmbH (MEC), a subsidiary of the Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S), is now offering industrial users a cost-saving system called "ISOPur" for effectively cleaning oils used for lubrication and in hydraulic systems and machinery. Within the framework of a sales agreement with Isopur Inc., Mechanik Center Erlangen is to sell ISOPur systems in Germany and is taking over a part of production for the European market. The ISOPur system is based on the electronic fluid dialysis method, developed by the US company, Isopur Inc., Cheshire, Connecticut, and enables the removal of foreign bodies down to a size of under 0.1 micrometers. The lifetime of the oils cleaned in this way increases considerably, while oil-related shutdown times as well as maintenance and repair costs are reduced. A return on investment is often achieved within only six months. Moreover, the amount of old oil is reduced. more |

May 20, 2003 | Siemens integrates process engineering in simulation - Simulation Based Engineering optimizes plant operation in the process industryBy integrating process engineering in plant simulation, the Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group (I&S) is providing a new way of optimizing plant operation over the whole life-cycle of the plant in accordance with business-management goals. New developments in process engineering are also taken into account. For the plant operator, this opens up new ways of running his plant - not only with the aim of achieving optimum performance but also of doing so according to business-management strategies. New developments in process design, process engineering and plant design can be analyzed with the help of Simulation Based Engineering (SBE) with regard to their effects on the business management of a company. Both the plant and the production processes can then be controlled according to the new criteria that are specified. The data thus obtained are available for later phases of modernization or for times when it becomes necessary to convert the equipment for other specific uses. SBE can also simulate plant behavior during normal operation, starting or in the event of faults and breakdowns. more |
