The pulp and paper factory for the production of uncoated fine paper and board of Mondi Business Papers in Syktyvkar, Komi Republic, Russia.

The Mondi Group, London/Johannesburg, is a leading international manufacturer of paper and packaging products. In Syktyvkar, the capital of the Komi Republic in Russia, Mondi operates a pulp and paper factory for the production of uncoated fine paper and board. In order to increase the production capacity, Mondi intends to spend around 525 million euros by 2010 on expansion of the location. This is the largest investment in the Russian pulp and paper industry since the middle of the nineteen-seventies. Siemens is supplying the electrical equipment for modernization of board machine BM21. This includes the multi-motor drives for the board machine and the roll slitter. The integrated, largely gearless 1FW3 hollow-shaft motors are mounted directly on the cylinder pins of the dryers and are supplied with power via power converters of the type Sinamics S120CM. A Sipaper Drive Controller based on Simatic PCS7 is responsible for open-loop and closed-loop control of the two machines. Siemens is also supplying the low-voltage switchgear together with the Geafol distribution transformers and will also do all the installation and commissioning work. The systems and components to be used are part of the Sipaper solution platform specially developed for the pulp and paper industry. In November 2008, Siemens equipped the existing paper machine PM14 with a multi-motor drive that encompasses around 30 individual motors. Power distribution equipment, power converters and motors for all the associated processes were also commissioned at the same time. By the end of the project in summer 2010, approximately 800 motors, 120 individual Sinamics and Micromaster converters, 34 motor control centers, around 40 Geafol distribution transformers and a 75/100 MVA power transformer as well as 7,000 A/100 kA generator switchgear will be in use. Moreover, the 110 kV switchgear will be augmented and the supplied 110 kV cable will be installed. Siemens is also responsible for all the associated installation, engineering and commissioning services as well as the protection system. The new SST-800 steam turbine-generator set comes from Siemens Energy and will be delivered at the end of September 2009. It consists of a turbine with mid-inlet having an output of 104 MW, a two-pole generator with the associated accessories, including the oil supply system, and closed-loop control and monitoring equipment.
