Siemens supplies electrical systems and drive technology for semi-submersible drilling-rigs of Transocean
Erlangen 2006-05-24
Two semi-submersible drilling rigs owned by a subsidiary of Transocean Inc. of Houston, USA will be supplied with new electrical systems and drive technology from Siemens. These contracts are worth 25 million Euros and include completing the electrical systems. The rigs will be upgraded and converted to be able to operate as dynamically positioned drilling vessels in deep water. The conversions will take place in Singapore and Europe and will be completed in 2008.
The
Siemens solution has been developed in close cooperation with
Transocean's engineering and project teams in Houston in order to
improve the reliability and availability of the power plant. The
electrical system has been designed to provide enough power to the
critical consumers under all conditions. It will help to considerably
reduce the risk of loss of power or "black-outs" during the operations.
The system can be considered as an enhanced fault tolerant design
providing increased availability compared to regular redundant systems.
Many of the functions in a standard Power Management system, normally
supplied by the automation system vendor, has been integrated into the
power system Siemens will now be supplying.
Siemens will supply a complete solution consisting of MV & LV
distribution, thrusters drives operated by common DC buses and with
Active Front Ends, power electronics, transformers, LV MCC, SCR drilling
drives, power management, as well as modelling and system analyses of
the whole network. The solution is based on Siplink, the multifunctional
Power Link from Siemens.
"This is a unique power and propulsion system that has been developed to
meet the special requirements of these rigs. We are proud to have
acquired a contract that is based on Siemens' ability to develop
innovative solutions in close cooperation with our customers," says Head
of division Are D. Dahl at Siemens Oil & Gas, Norway.
The delivery is a joint venture project between Siemens Industrial
Solutions, Oil & Gas and the Construction Department of Siemens Power
Transmission and Distribution in Erlangen, Germany. Transocean, which is
the world's largest drilling company, has contracted for a new advanced
drill ship and has selected the same solution for it. Transocean Inc. is
the world's largest drilling company.
