Siemens Supplies Compressors and Turbines for China’s Largest Olefin Plant
Erlangen 2006-01-24
Siemens Power Generation (PG) is supplying a total of six compressors and three steam turbines to China. These machines will be installed in China’s largest olefin plant in Dushanzi, located in northwestern China. The plant is being constructed by the technology group Linde under a contract received from Petrochina International. Capacity is about one million tons of ethylene and 500,000 tons of propylene per year, these products will chiefly be used as feedstocks in the plastics industry. The plant is thus currently the largest of its kind in China. Production is scheduled to commence in the second half of 2008.
Siemens PG is supplying five single-shaft compressors with
horizontally-split casings (STC-SH) as well as one compressor with a
vertically-split casing (STC-SV). This series of single-shaft
compressors is designed for a maximum intake volume flow of up to
480,000 cubic meters per hour. They will be driven by three Siemens
SST-600 steam turbines. The turbine-compressor trains will be used to
compress raw gas, ethylene and propylene.
"This contract underscores our increasing importance on the booming
Chinese market," emphasized Dr. Peter Langer, who is responsible for
Compressor Solutions business at Siemens PG in Duisburg. "At the same
time, this contract confirms our solid position in the petrochemical
sector, in particular very large-scale plants," added Langer.
Furthermore, PG profits from the rapid growth in worldwide ethylene
production. The company has already logged the fifth comparable order
this year.
Currently growth of the Chinese market for ethylene and propylene is
more rapid than elsewhere. The information provider ICIS anticipates
that China will achieve an ethylene production of over 4.5 million tons
in the year 2009. That is more than four times as much as was expected
in 2006. Over the period from 2006 and 2009, the demand for propylene
will also increase by more than a factor of four to 2.3 million tons.
The Power Generation Group (PG) of Siemens AG is one of the premier
companies in the international power generation sector. In fiscal 2005
(which ended September 30), Siemens PG posted sales amounting to
approximately EUR8.1 billion and received new orders totaling EUR10.9
billion. Group profit amounted to EUR951 million. On September 30, 2005,
PG had a work force of approximately 33,500 worldwide.
