Siemens equips refinery in Belarus with power supply systems
Erlangen 2006-01-24
The Siemens Industrial Solutions and Services Group
(I&S) has received orders from the JSC "Mozyr Oil Refinery" in Belarus
to equip the alkylation plant and the extractive distillation plant with
new power supply systems. The projects also include uninterruptible
power supply (UPS) systems, basic automation and HMI systems. The total
value of the orders is around 3.5 million euros.
The JSC "Mozyr Oil Refinery" in the Gomel region of the southeast of
White Russia is one of the largest refineries in the country. In 2004,
around six million tonnes of crude oil were refined. This corresponds to
45 per cent of total production of Belarus. A large proportion of the
products are exported to European countries. In the framework of a
comprehensive modernization program, the company is currently renovating
the alkylation plant and the extractive distillation plant.
Siemens is supplying and installing the power supply systems needed for
this purpose. The alkylation plant is being equipped with new
medium-voltage switchgear, transformers and a new low-voltage supply
system including protection equipment. An uninterruptible power supply
(UPS) system will guarantee the availability of electrical energy in the
event of brief power cuts or voltage fluctuations. In addition, Siemens
is supplying all the basic automation, which is based on Simatic S7
programmable controllers. WinCC will be used for HMI tasks. The
extractive distillation plant is also being equipped with new
low-voltage equipment, a UPS system and new basic automation. Here as
well, WinCC will be used for visualization. The plant personnel will be
able to gain an up-to-date overview of the current status of the
electrical equipment at any time. Functional faults can be diagnosed as
soon as they occur and can be located and rectified in a very short
time. This will increase the availability of the plant.
Main reasons why Siemens was awarded the contract were the good level of
cooperation between the JSC "Moyzr Oil Refinery" and Siemens in past
projects, and the high quality of the Siemens equipment. In 2002, for
example, Siemens had equipped the catalytic cracker of the refinery with
a new power supply system. After start-up, this facility has been
operating for a total of two years without failures.
