The current financial crisis affecting the
steel industry will inevitably result in a
cutback in funds and expenditures for
environmental protection. In the midst of a
recession with swelling numbers of unemployed,
management priority is a different one. However,
even in times of economic downturn, the question
is not whether we can afford to invest in green
solutions. Much more, the crucial question is
whether we can afford not to continue the
momentum of efforts focusing on environmental
protection. What is needed above all is a
pragmatic strategy that addresses the needs of
industrial viability and employment
simultaneously with urgent ecological demands.
It is shown in the following that by applying
best-performance technologies in the steel
industry – a major consumer of fossil fuels –
not only can the energy consumption and
environmental emissions be slashed, but
producers can save a lot of money as well.
