Modernization extends Wuhan Iron and Steel's range of products: Siemens supplies main drives and new process automation for cold rolling mill

Siemens has received an order from Wuhan Iron and Steel (Group) Co. (Wisco), a Chinese steelmaker, to equip a coupled tandem pickling line in cold rolling mill no. 1 with energy-saving main drives. The Siroll CM process automation system will also be modernized. The order is worth several million euros. When the project is completed in September 2010, Wisco will also be able to produce high-strength steel grades in the plant. more

Jindal Steel & Power Ltd. orders caster from Siemens for new integrated production facility in Angul, India

Siemens VAI Metals Technologies received an order from Jindal Steel & Power Ltd (JSPL) for the supply of a new single-strand slab caster which will be built at Angul in the Indian state of Orissa. The machine, which will be equipped with a wide range of technological packages, will be one of the most advanced slab casters in India. Start-up is scheduled for September 2011. more

Siemens modernizes automation in Altos Hornos de Mexico's Monclova hot rolling mill

Altos Hornos de Mexico, S.A.B. de C.V. (AHMSA) has awarded Siemens a contract to modernize their existing basic and process automation systems on their Monclova Hot Strip Mill. Siemens will supply and install modern automation technology based on the Siroll HM platform, which is specifically designed for hot rolling mills. The total value of the order is 21 million US dollars and the project is due to be completed in the summer of 2011. more

Zenith Steel expands rod mill capacity, product range with two new rod outlets

Zenith Steel (Changzhou Zhongtian Iron & Steel) in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, People’s Republic of China, has signed multiple contracts for two rod outlets for the company’s new rod mills that will be located in Changzhou. The contracts are valued at more than €10 million. After the new equipment’s installation, the mills for this privately-owned, midsized steelmaker will produce up to 150 tons per hour on each line. more

Bhushan Power&Steel in India continues to place its trust in drive technology and automation systems from Siemens

Siemens VAI Metals Technologies has received an order from Bhushan Power&Steel Co. to supply the drives and automation system for expansion of the company's compact hot rolling mill in Orrissa, India. The scope of supply also includes two reactive-power compensators for electric arc furnaces. Commissioning is scheduled for July 2010. more

Modernization project on voestalpine Stahl's hot strip mill in Linz: refurbished coiler supports expansion of product range

At voestalpine Stahl GmbH in Linz, Austria Siemens VAI Metals Technologies has replaced the existing coiler 3 on the hot strip mill with a completely new coiler system. Conversion and commissioning were done together with a consortium partner. With the aid of the new high-performance coiler system, voestalpine will be able to expand its hot strip product range. The hot strip mill resumed operation on schedule in August. more

Siemens brings world’s first 4000 ampere vacuum circuit breaker for frequent-operation applications without forced cooling onto the market

Siemens is meeting the steel industry’s growing demand for every higher performance levels in melting down scrap metal by launching a refined medium-voltage circuit-breaker. As of September 2009, the company offers 3AH4 vacuum circuit-breakers with an operating current of 4000 amperes (A) for the 36-kilovolt voltage level. It is the first vacuum circuit-breaker worldwide for frequent-operation applications up to 120,000 switching cycles capable of handling such a high operating current without forced cooling. The short-circuit breaking current is 40 kiloamperes (kA) at a voltage of up to 40.5 kilovolts (kV). Siemens has developed these circuit-breakers above all for special applications in the steel industry, such as for switching operations on electric arc furnaces. more

Jiangsu Shagang expands production capacity with two Siemens rod outlets

The Jiangsu Shagang Group Company has awarded contracts to Siemens VAI Metals Technologies for two new rod outlets to increase capacity and improve product quality at its Zhangjiagang mill. The value of the order is more than 10 million euro. Delivery is mid-2010 for the first rod outlet, and third quarter 2010 for the second. more
