Our Common Metallurgical Background
Already in the year 1880 Sir William
Siemens built the world’s first
electric arc furnace. Five years
later, the well known Siemens Martin
furnace was introduced to the iron
and steel industry. The birth of the
LD steelmaking process took place in
Linz, Austria with the
implementation of the world's first
oxygen steelmaking plant at VOEST in
1952. The contract for the supply of
an LD steel plant to Rourkela, India
in 1956 marked the beginning of the
international plant-building history
of VAI.
Thus, with the merger of Siemens and
VAI in the year 2005, a historical
event took place as both companies
share a common legacy in the
metallurgical industry. The combined
technological and innovation
strength of both companies means an
even greater capability in setting
the benchmark standards for plant
performance and product quality.
