Iron ore and coke are basic raw materials for manufacturing of pig iron. The coal preparation area is responsible for preparing coal-blend which satisfies strict set of physical and chemical criteria's. The coal blend comprises of hard coal. This coal-blend is heated in a closed oven in the absence of oxygen to form coke. A collection of ovens form a battery.
The hot coke from the coke oven battery is quenched either using conventional water quenching or coke dry quenching (most efficient and reduced emission) before being sent for coke screening. During the coking process, volatile substances are released from coal-blend in the form of hot, raw coke oven gas. This gas after a series of treatment steps in the by-product plant can be used as a fuel gas for heating purposes (e.g. in coke oven batteries) or for power generation etc. Various by-products recovered from the coke oven gas are sold to the chemical and agricultural industries.
