With outstanding quality requirements from their
customers and an increased competitive environment that
imposes to do more with less, traditional surface
quality control practices (visual inspection) are now
inappropriate for steel makers. The challenge is to
replace human experts with automatic systems capable of
performing constant, round-the-clock surface inspection.
The reliability of these systems is critical: they
should guarantee that no critical defect will go
undetected, but without generating many false alarms
that make the system unusable.
Another challenge is to perform inspection at locations
where it was previously unfeasible due to many obstacles
(speed, temperature, environment). This is for example
the case at the hot strip mill, where stakes for early
defect detection are enormous: avoiding
"defect crisis" by early
identification of the defects origin (e.g. roll change);
early removal of defective product from the production
stream without adding further value; yield reduction due
to "traditional"
quality control practices (wrap, re-inspection); faster
feed-back to upstream plants (e.g. caster).
The SIAS system was specifically designed for on-line surface quality monitoring of metals, detecting and classifying the following defects:
The results are available in real-time in order to take immediate decisions that ensure:
The SIROLLCIS SIAS solution is the result of 15 years of focused development and continuous improvement. Our exclusive on-line sensor arrangement, the dual HMI design elaborated together with end-users, an open database structure for results storage and user-friendly administration tools are some of the advantages of the SIAS technology.
SIROLLCIS SIAS systems are successfully operating on the following applications:
