SISHIPCIS SSP
More efficient, highly maneuverable

The SISHIPCIS SSP drive is a rotatable podded azimuthing diesel-electric propulsion system offering a performance range of between 5 to 10 MW per unit. It was developed by the SSP consortium, a cooperation between Siemens and SCHOTTEL Antriebstechnik in Wismar.

The challenge
The field of commercial shipbuilding is facing new demands: cargo and passenger space is expanding and environmental regulations are becoming stricter. As a result, more efficient propulsion systems are required to replace conventional diesel-mechanical motors in certain types of vessels. These new drive solutions need be low-maintenance and highly efficient, while providing excellent maneuvering and automatic positioning capabilities. They also need to meet stringent safety standards.

Our solution
Because of its hydrodynamic design and its permanently excited synchronous motor, the SSP drive is significantly more efficient than conventional diesel direct drives and azimuth thrusters. It also offers excellent maneuverability. These qualities combine to make the SISHIPCIS SSP a high-performance drive solution that is also cost-effective. The SSP drive’s permanently excited motor features electrical properties similar to those of a conventional synchronized motor. This allows the drive to be easily integrated into conventional drive systems.

Good reasons for SISHIPCIS SSP
  • Higher degree of efficiency, low noise and vibration levels
  • Simple design with fewer components lowers maintenance costs, elimination of rudders, crankshafts, bossings, etc.
  • More design flexibility of the ship’s stern and engine room
  • More passenger/cargo space
  • Excellent maneuverability, especially at low speeds, without additional stern thrusters
