    SIMETALCIS MES:
    MES meets steelmaking
    The challenge
    Typically, steel plants consist of essentially selfsufficient processing stations with fixed transport routes for each particular grade of steel. However, because these different processing stations are networked, a fault in a single component can negatively impact the entire operation. Therefore, if a fault or even downtime occurs at one point in the process, management must be notified quickly and with the information necessary to make the right decision. In this way, faults can be remedied promptly or even prevented at first indication, which helps to keep your plant at a high level of overall availability. This means that management must be reliably supported with factual information when a fault occurs, so that they can remedy it and increase overall availability. To safeguard your investment, it must be possible to flexibly adapt the technology to evolving production requirements at all times. To achieve this, solutions must allow continuously increased productivity and make it easy to expand functionality.

    Our solution

    SIMETALCIS MES is a complete MES Industry Solution for the Steel Industry.

    It consists of flexible modules for MES functions based on ISA-S95 standard. Because each plant or customer is unique, SIMETALCIS MES can be configured to meet the different needs in productions without programming. The following functional groups based on ISA-95 are available:

    Production Planning and Order Status Management:

    Production Planning and Scheduling functions on different Planning Levels are available to create production programs for the different plant units. Once a production schedule was downloaded for execution, the status of each production order step is monitored and material consumption is assigned to each production step for reporting or processing in ERP.

    Product Definition and Quality Control:

    Modules are available to describe, how a specific material (Steel Grade, Slab, Billet etc.) shall be produced. Here production routes, set point values and constraints for the different production steps are defined. These production definitions are considered by production scheduling. During production, deviation from set point values ranges can automatically identified and processed via production rules. In case of quality issues, specific tasks can be executed. A complete Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) can be integrated as on option to MES.

    Production and Material Management:

    During production, all changes from raw material to the final product can be tracked by material Management. Full tracking and tracing of the produced material including full genealogy is available. This provides full transparency of production also in case of quality issues. Next to the information of material, also production resources are taken into account. The status of each production unit relevant production unit (like meltshop devices, different parts of rolling mills) is monitored. Also status and location of production equipment like rolls, ladles, molds etc. are tracked and monitored by MES Modules. In case of material tracking and control in stockyard areas, like coil yards, slabyards etc., SIMETALCIS SILOC can be integrated to MES as an option to keep 100% track of the material movement and location. -> details

    Production Performance Management and Downtime Analytics:

    Keep track of the production performance and downtime is essential for steel production. SIMETALCIS MES provided functions to receive and process performance and downtime information in predefined modules. This information can be derived from real time information of the production environment (Scada Systems, PLCs etc.) or based on manual input. A comprehensive set of functions is included to first describe production KPIs based on real time and production data, which later can be analyzed in charts and other analytic tools.

    User Frontend and Reports :

    The MES solution always needs a powerful graphical user interface. All operator centric tasks are provided in a web portal installed with the MES solution in the intranet of the customer. Access rights to the different information of MES can be freely defined. Production information is stored in the MES production database. A comprehensive report manager tool is included in the solution. Production reports can be freely defined based on production data and can be integrated in MES and published later via the intranet.

    Connectivity :

    Because MES is most cases also the link between the production and ERP, powerfull functions are needed to connect easily to external systems. SIMETALCIS MES provided data integration services with standard adapters to connect to production e.g. via OPC or to an ERP by SAP-Connectors.

    Flexibility:

    All above described functions can be used in a modular and scalable IT environment to provide the individual MES solution. Because MES solutions are often subject to ongoing changes or improvments, most changes can be done without programming. In addition software lifecycle services are available to adapt to future changes in the system environment. (update services etc.)
