SIMETALCIS LiquiRob during tundish sampling The challenge In a steel works environment, particularly where liquid hot metal is produced or manipulated, operators are continually exposed to dangerous working conditions. It is expected that safety standards will improve over time and from a certain stage of technological development onward, no operator will be allowed to work in areas with the imminent danger that results from handling liquid steel above floor level. A further issue is to ensure the reliability, repeatability and the monitoring of operations which have a direct influence on product quality, carried out by operators.

Our solution

Siemens VAI has developed the so-called SIMETALCIS LiquiRob technology for fully automatic casting floor operation -- from start of casting to finalizing a sequence. This robot system is capable of performing a multitude of tasks such as temperature and oxygen measuring, steel sampling and tundishpowder dosing. Furthermore, in the near future, SIMETALCIS LiquiRob will be able to perform ladle oxygen lancing, connecting of the ladle and shroud handling operations. These processes can therefore be monitored from the safety of the control room. SIMETALCIS LiquiRob is not only a major step ahead for increased personnel safety; It also represents a solution for enhanced product quality and productivity.
