SIMETALCIS LiquiRob for EAF
Robot-aided measuring and sampling at EAF

Demands for modern steel production are high productivity, production flexibility and product quality. Robots are common in operation in many industries. Now, Siemens VAI introduces a robot suitable for harsh operation conditions and rough environment at casters, secondary metallurgical plants, converters and also EAFs. Our answer is a robot performing fully automatic temperature and sample measurements including cartridge replacement, so that manual or manipulator measurements are obsolete.

SIMETALCIS LiquiRob
The challenge
Personnel health and safety when working in the vicinity of steel, slag and extremly hot environment is our main concern. The steelplant managers take full responsibilty regarding health and safety of their employees as well as strict compliance with the associated legislation.
A further issue is accuracy and reliability in performing measurement and taking samples during production, having direct influence on the quality of the produced steel and on productivity thanks to faster cycle times and less measurement errors.

Our solution
With the SIMETALCIS LiquiRob, Siemens VAI provides a highly flexible robot-aided measuring and sampling solution that gives you the flexibility and reliability needed to ensure uninterrupted, fail-safe and controlled EAF steel production.
The SIMETALCIS LiquiRob will replace mechanical manipulators benefiting from higher availibility and easy upgrading and learning of new operations. In many cases it will prevent operators from making temperature or celox measurements or taking samples. Thanks to the SIMETALCIS LiquiRob, work in hazardous areas is largely eliminated.

Maximum flexibility
Flexibility in movement:
With its 6-axis movement, the SIMETALCIS LiquiRob may be applied even under extremely tight space conditions. Consequently, very short cycle times can be achieved. Furthermore, the SIMETALCIS LiquiRob is a perfect upgrade solution for existing plants.
Flexibility in measuring:
Due to its high degree of flexibility, the SIMETALCIS LiquiRob can be used for handling various kinds of cartridges, without any major modifications.

Low maintenance costs
The SIMETALCIS LiquiRob is a proven, matured system and is virtually maintenance-free. The maintenance cycles are significantly longer when compared to those of conventional manipulators. To protect it from dust and heat, the robot is covered with a special fabric.

Ease of use
During most of its operating time, the SIMETALCIS LiquiRob needs no operator interaction because the system is controlled by a state-of-the-art automation system. A Siemens HMI guarantees easy handling and short learning time.

Additional features
The SIMETALCIS LiquiRob recognizes defective cartridges and sorts them out before carrying out any measurement, thus avoiding time-consuming measurement errors. Furthermore it is also possible to check the contact rod position, so the availability of the system is guaranteed.

Good reasons for SIMETALCIS LiquiRob for EAF
  • Significant increase of health and safety conditions by keeping the workers away from dangerous areas during the processes
  • Higher reproducibility of measurements
  • Handling of various types of cartridges (T, S, celox), with potential of cartridge cost reduction
  • Shorter process cycles – flexible and fast exchange of cartridges
  • Higher availability of the system compared to manipulators
