SIWACIS PAS WAN
Connecting telecontrol to SIMATIC PCS 7

SIWACIS PAS WAN provides the link between telecontrol and the SIMATIC PCS 7, so that many different third-party systems can be integrated in the PCS 7 control system.
The inclusion of information from external plants creates transparency across the whole process. The ability to use the control system to operate the external plants allows rapid reaction to exceptional incidents. Operational reliability is guaranteed through monitoring and control of the external station.

SIWACIS PAS WAN
The challenge
The systems used in the water industry in connection with the water supply and sewage disposal networks characteristically have a decentralized structure. Optimization of an entire system requires providing the operating personnel with the necessary information, including information from external plants, at all times. The aim is to enable operating personnel to intervene in the process effectively on the basis of this information, if required. A very high level of data transmission security is vitally important, especially in widely distributed systems. Even a temporary failure of transmission links must not lead to any loss of data whatsoever. Moreover, the operation and monitoring interface system and the processing of process data must be implemented in the same way as in local plant sections in order to provide a standard user interface for the operator.

Our solution
SIWACIS PAS WAN essentially onsists of two components: a gateway for linking the trunk lines and modules that are matched for communication with the gateway and embedded in a local SIMATIC PCS 7 automation system. This integration ensures that the human-machine interface level is supplied in the same way as at all local automation systems, and operators thereby benefit from a very high degree of standardization in operation. Communication between the gateway and the automation system is via the local Ethernet. The engineering is based on an intuitive concept, making it even possible to set up the user interfaces on the individual operator terminals without any specialized knowledge.

Telecontrol technology – Siemens sets the standard
Thanks to SIWACIS PAS WAN, the Siemens telecontrol system SINAUT ST 7 can be used with its full functionality with the SIMATIC PCS 7 process control system. All data transmission options can be used. Transmission is based on the store-and-forward principle, with reliable backup measures against loss of data. If the communication link is lost, local storage of the data telegrams provides maximum data security. The use of narrow-band networks guarantees the transfer of modified data including time stamp. SIWACIS PAS WAN thus allows complete monitoring and operation of the linked telecontrol stations, with the possibility to perform remote fault diagnosis and remote programming for the entire network conveniently from the control center.

Open for third-party telecontrol systems
SIWACIS PAS WAN naturally also provides facility for connecting many telecontrol systems from other vendors to our SIMATIC PCS 7 process control system. Existing solutions can be integrated and can be used on without any problems, thereby investments are long-term protected long-term protection of investments.

Good reasons for SIWACIS PAS WAN
  • Increased operational reliability by merging information from decentralized and local plant sections
  • Crrectly timed archiving even if the data is supplied late, for example with cost-optimized dial-up traffic or in the event of interruption of the communication route
  • Accommodates local situations by making use of many different transmission paths, including private leased lines, public telephone networks as well as wireless routes and GSM networks
  • Use of low-cost narrow-band networks by transmitting only data that has been modified
  • Safeguarding of investments by linking existing telecontrol systems to SIMATIC PCS 7
