Power generation à la carte

There are many different ways of generating power on board. Besides conventional diesel-generators, there is the shaft generator which takes advantage of the propeller shaft rotation, saving expensive diesel fuel, since the main engine runs on heavy oil. The shaft generator either eliminates the need for independently driven generators or reduces the wear and tear - and hence maintenance requirement - of on-board diesel-generator sets.
