It is small, silent and produces only
little heat. It generates no exhaust
gases and is highly efficient. And it
has no moving parts and is practically
maintenance-free: The fuel cell.
PEM (polymer electrolyte membrane) fuel
cell modules from Siemens generate
energy by converting hydrogen and
oxygen into electricity. With
considerably better efficiency and a
much lower emission of pollutants than
conventional converters of energy. Pure
water is all that's left behind.
These advantages make the fuel cell
ideal for generating electric power
aboard submarines.
The new submarines class 212 of the
German and Italian Navy are equipped
with Siemens fuel cells.
