German navy has ordered two further Class U 212 A submarines – Order value for Siemens 55 million euros

For the German navy, Siemens is equipping two new Class U 212 A submarines with the latest propulsion and control technology. The value of the order amounts to around 55 million euros.

The submarines are being built in the dockyards of Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft GmbH (HDW) in Kiel, Germany, a company belonging to ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems. The order for Siemens includes the supply of a Permasyn permanent-magnet excited synchronous motor, PEM (polymer electrolyte membrane) fuel cells as the core component of the air-independent propulsion system, switchgear and the automation system EMCS (Engineering, Monitoring and Control System). The scope of supply also encompasses spare parts and commissioning. The solutions and systems being used are part of the Sinavy SUB family of products specially developed for submarines and comply with the high requirements of submarine specifications. The electric propulsion systems with Permasyn motors for DC supply are characterized by their extremely low noise signature, high availability, compact design and ease of operation. A PEM fuel-cell system enables air-independent propulsion (AIP) of the submarines when they are submerged. The AIP system comes from HDW while Siemens is providing the fuel-cell modules as well as the control and monitoring devices for the AIP system. The integrated automation system controls, monitors and coordinates all the engineering systems. Operator control and visualization are carried out centrally from the control console. As a result, the operator is relieved from having to perform routine tasks, operation of the submarines is made easier and their safety and reliability are increased. The scope of supply also includes submarine-specific DC voltage switchgear and electronic documentation. Up to now, four Class 212 submarines have been supplied to the German navy and two submarines of the same kind have been supplied to the Italian navy. Even after delivery, Siemens is able to provide support services for the submarines over their entire life cycle. “From publications and talks with various navy representatives, we know that all six submarines have proven their worth in practical service with the navies in questionâ€, said Heinz Waschin, the person at Siemens Marine Solutions responsible for submarine business. The AIP system, which is based on Siemens fuel cells, has demonstrated its huge advantages in practical submarine operations and has fulfilled all the expectations associated with it.
