“Online Inspector†for Shipping Companies Monitors the Operating Data of Ships on long Journeys online

Shipping companies and ship owners can now centrally monitor the operating data, location and movement of their ships twenty-four hours a day on all seas around the world. This is based on automatically generated e-mails with different machine parameters, different operating data such as fuel consumption and alarms as well as different nautical information. All this data and information is automatically processed in a central computer and displayed together with the ship's position with the help of Google Maps API. Evaluation of the data enables statements to be made regarding the current operating status of the ship and makes it possible to display individual operational changes over an extended period of time. In conjunction with the Hartmann shipping company of Leer, Siemens will be presenting the “Online Inspector†at SMM 2008 for the first time.

The tracking tool makes it possible to display the ship's position and nautical data with the help of Google Maps API
The tracking tool records all alarms from the machine room and all ship-operating parameters. It then automatically generates a graph showing the variations.
This tracking tool from Siemens means that inspectors at the headquarters of shipping companies can now access the same ship operating information as the chief engineer on board. All alarms from the machine control room and parameters such as cooling-water temperature and performance data of the main propulsion system are listed with time details. The web-based tool evaluates these messages automatically and records trends such as changes in exhaust-gas temperatures and other machine parameters, whereby the changes are also displayed graphically as a curve. “In the headquarters of the shipping company, we can use this tracking tool to obtain all the data detected by sensors and all the information relating to the operating states of a ship in a daily updated formâ€, said Christian Müller, who works for Siemens Marine Solutions and is responsible for ship life-cycle management. Thanks to the tracking tool, operational and consumption-related data are transparent for the shipping company while the ship is thousands of nautical miles away from its port of registry. “The tracking tool data, which can be obtained by means of secure Internet access, can thus serve as the basis for preventive measures for maintenance of a ship or even an entire fleetâ€, emphasized Müller. The inspectors can therefore detect changes at an early stage or retrospectively over periods of several years. They can also correct adverse tendencies and thus plan and closely monitor their budget for ship maintenance. This considerably improves the cost-effectiveness of ship operations.
