General description

SINAMICS G180 are compact devices, cabinet systems and cabinet units (air and liquid cooled) for variable-speed drives in plant and machinery construction; which have been specifically designed for applications in oil and gas, the chemical and process industries. They have been specially developed to address the requirements of drives with square law and constant load characteristics.
SINAMICS G180 represents the optimum drive solution that can be adapted to the various sector-specific requirements in the core sectors using a wide range of options and X options (special, customer-specific options).
SINAMICS G180 can be flexibly integrated into any automation concept, either using conventional control or via a bus system.
All of the drive requirements – from the motor through the converter transformer, cabling, converter, line conditions and link to the supervisory control level – are taken into consideration from the very start.

Explosion protection

SINAMICS G180 are designed for operation with explosion-proof motors and optimized for EEx n, EEx e and EEx d types of protection.

  • Integrated du/dt filter at the converter output

  • Line filter at the converter input

  • NAMUR terminals according to NE 37

  • PELV (protective separation) according to IEC/EN 61800-5-1

  • Insulation monitoring for 500 V & 690 V devices (IT line systems)

  • Ex protection: ATEX-certified for motors in hazardous zones

  • A main contactor can be eliminated (according to Directive 94/9 EC)

Control Unit

High level of protection for personnel and equipment is provided through protective separation of the safety extra-low voltage in accordance with IEC/EN 61800‑5‑1 at the analog and digital control inputs and outputs of the power unit.


  • Communication via conventional terminal strip with freely programmable digital and analog inputs/outputs.

  • Communication and parameter assignment using - PC with IMS (Inverter Management Software) via USB port

  • External/internal operator panel

SINAMICS G180 drive behavior

  • Two control modes for induction motors:
    Space vector control for standard applications (without feedback)
    Field-orientated control to address dynamic requirements.

  • Optimum braking without any supplementary equipment based on an oversaturation control system. With approximately 10% braking torque at high speeds and up to 50 % at low to mid-range speeds.

  • Automatic slip compensation

  • Stall protection provided by current limitation control

  • Flying restart function for connection to rotating motor

  • Parameterizable DC braking for precise deceleration/braking down to zero speed

  • Torque control

  • Automatic restart (auto restart)

  • Integrated process controller for basic, higher-level closed-loop control tasks
