Intelligent solutions in airfield technology

The category of precision approach runway lighting is determined by the prevailing visibility conditions. For each of the different categories, ICAO worked out standard AGL layouts.

Lighting systems

Depending on visibility conditions under which airports have to operate, as well as on available radio navigation equipment, lighting systems should comprise all visual aids needed for clearly marking the approach sector, runways, taxiways and apron, and for routing the landed aircraft safely.

The AGL system includes the following equipment:

  • Hazard and obstacle lighting
  • Wind direction equipment
  • Identification beacons
  • Apron floodlighting
  • Signal equipment
  • Docking system
Airside visual aids are gaining increasing importance for the safe movement of aircraft on the ground. The increase of traffic volume and the need for continuous improvement of traffic safety on runways, taxiways and apron are technical and economic challenges for intelligent airfield lighting and control.

Based on our many decades of experience in the field of airport technology, Siemens has established a strong market position as the single source for complete solutions in airfield products, systems and related services.

Airfield lighting products and systems from Siemens guide airplanes and helicopters on hundreds of airports worldwide - 24 hours / 7 days a week with the highest reliability and economic efficiency.
